Today’s gospel has been called ‘the best short story in the world’s literature.’ Allow the story of the prodigal son draw you into God’s loving forgiveness.
The call of God is always to become more like Jesus in how we treat his people. We know our failings: the call to repent in today’s gospel is also the promise of God’s forgiveness for our filings and sins.
The gift of God’s love and the following of James is offered to all of us by God. It is a gift we struggle with, as evil in the owrld tempts us to live in Selfishness. Lent, and today’s gospel, reminds us of the glory of our calling to follow in Jesus’ ways.
What do we have to show for all the love God has shown us? Are our words full of bitterness or sweetness?
It is all too easy to trust in our own possessions – and the more we have the easier it is. But they are all temporary. If we put our trust in the Resurrection and live in its spirit we shall inherit eternal life.
God in Christ chooses his apostles, men whom the world would think weak, maybe unsuitable, these are the ones he wants for himself. We are called by God even though we may feel unworthy in his sight. That in itself is a sign of God’s grace: it is the way to his kingdom.
